The strike will affect 20,000 members working across 14 train operating companies.
The union claimed that the companies had failed to make a new pay offer after the last was rejected as being too low during the current cost of living crisis.
The RMT general secretary Mick Lynch said that the government was blocking a fair deal and that the union's campaign of rail strikes had managed to prevent bosses from pushing through redundancies and controversial reforms such as mass ticket office closures.
The latest phase of rail industry strikes, also involving the drivers' union Aslef, targeted people going to the Eurovision Song Contest in Liverpool and, latterly, the FA Cup Final at Wembley.
