RMT (National Union of Rail, Maritime, and Transport Workers) members are set to vote on a pay deal offered by UK train companies that could potentially end their ongoing industrial action. The offer includes backdated pay increases for staff and job security guarantees.
The RMT's dispute with rail companies, lasting nearly 18 months, has involved strikes for better job security, pay, and conditions. Last month, RMT members voted for a new six-month strike mandate, raising the possibility of Christmas and spring strikes.
After negotiations, a memorandum of understanding (MOU) was developed, offering a 5% or £1,750 backdated pay rise for 2022 and job security guarantees until the end of 2024. The MOU could halt strikes over Christmas and into spring if accepted by RMT members in an upcoming vote.
