Sunak will join the University of Oxford's Blavatnik School of Government as a member of its World Leaders Circle and will also serve as a visiting fellow at Stanford University's Hoover Institution in California.
Sunak's academic background includes studying Philosophy, Politics, and Economics at Oxford University, followed by obtaining a Master of Business Administration at Stanford University.
In a statement, Sunak expressed his enthusiasm about contributing to the work of both institutions, which he credits with significantly influencing his life and career.
In his statement about joining these roles, Sunak highlighted the institutions' efforts in addressing economic and security issues as well as seizing technological opportunities.
His connection to Stanford is also noted for personal reasons, as it was there he met his wife, Akshata Murty.
These appointments come amidst discussions about a potential return to California for Sunak, a narrative referenced frequently during previous political campaigns.
Alongside these academic engagements, Sunak remains active in UK politics as the Member of Parliament for Richmond and Northallerton, a role he has held since returning to the backbenches last year.
The move to take up academic roles post-premiership is not unprecedented.
Former Prime Ministers Sir Tony Blair and Gordon Brown also engaged in academic pursuits following their political tenures, with Blair teaching at Yale University and Brown becoming a 'distinguished leader in residence' at New York University.
The Chancellor of Oxford University, Lord William Hague, praised Sunak's appointment, pointing out the value of his extensive experience in government.
Similarly, the director of the Hoover Institution, Condoleezza Rice, welcomed Sunak, noting his policy experience and global insights as valuable additions to the institution’s fellowship.
