UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has come under fire from senior Tories and grassroots members for missing a key part of the D-Day commemorations to attend a TV interview.

Criticism came from Penny Mordaunt, Leader of the House of Commons, who called his absence 'completely wrong.' Sunak's decision has dismayed party members and veterans alike; Ken Hay, a 98-year-old D-Day veteran, said Sunak 'let the country down.' David Cameron, the Foreign Secretary, stood in for Sunak at Omaha Beach alongside world leaders.

The misstep has political ramifications, as some local Tory chairs believe it may cost the party seats in the 4 July elections.

Despite a public apology, Sunak's absence is being viewed as a significant tactical error by his advisers, prompting both Labour and Reform UK to criticize him.

Opposition leaders Keir Starmer and Ed Davey also condemned the Prime Minister's actions, accusing him of undermining civic responsibility.
