Rishi Sunak Declines to Confirm if Airlines Will Commit to Rwanda Flights

Rishi Sunak has declined to provide specifics on whether airlines will participate in deporting asylum seekers to Rwanda due to concerns about potential harm to their reputations. While he is certain that the UK can transfer asylum seekers to Rwanda, he did not confirm if any airlines are on board, citing the importance of commercial confidentiality.

Sunak has not set a firm date for when small boat crossings will cease or when the backlog of asylum claims will be processed, though he maintains progress is being made. He faced criticism for a lack of transparency regarding the costs of the Rwandan deportation scheme, which have risen to £290 million.

James Cleverly later stated in parliament that the UK will wait for Rwanda to fulfill all treaty requirements before proceeding with removals. He also softened previous critiques of the UN refugee agency after the Supreme Court found fault with the UK's deportation plans due to concerns about Rwanda's asylum system.

Regarding economic inequality, Sunak expressed confidence in the government's progress but did not offer a timeline for when reliance on food banks would diminish. He responded to inquiries about his concern over economic inequality and food bank dependence with reassurances that current policies aim to support vulnerable populations.
