The AI program, called InnerEye, has been trained by researchers at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge with Microsoft and takes less time than traditional methods, reducing the time patients must wait before starting radiotherapy.
The program is 90% accurate and has been approved by clinicians without corrections in two-thirds of cases.
The NHS Artificial Intelligence Laboratory funded the necessary safety checks and evaluations, and the program is now being given to a manufacturer to be made available to other NHS trusts at cost price.
The government has invested in AI projects across the NHS, but this is the first NHS-developed AI program released as a medical-imaging device.
