Researchers from Sussex and Northumbria universities recommend that cat owners consider various play activities to engage their pets.

Published in the journal Nature, the study reports that many cats naturally engage in play and enjoy taking the lead during games, often without needing training.

Jemma Forman, a doctoral candidate at the University of Sussex, observed that cats who initiate play tend to engage more, underlining the benefits to their well-being and their bond with owners.

The study, which included data from 924 owners overseeing 1,154 cats, found most cats (94.4%) display an innate ability to fetch from an early age. Among purebred cats, Siamese, Bengals, and Ragdolls ranked highest in fetch-playing.

Dr. Elizabeth Renner from Northumbria University highlighted that the behavior is mainly cat-driven, as few owners report teaching their cats to fetch, underscoring the natural inclination of cats towards this activity.
