Refugees Risk Homelessness Amid Housing Deadline Issue

Refugees are at risk of homelessness as they report being given only a week's notice to vacate temporary housing, contrary to the officially stated 28-day period. The Bishop of London highlighted these concerns in the House of Lords, questioning the enforcement of the 28-day notice and the related data collected by the Home Office.

Responding to the query, Home Office Minister Lord Sharpe explained the process, indicating that refugees should have over 28 days after obtaining their biometric residence permit before they must leave the accommodation. He noted that claimants are notified well in advance.

However, when pressed for details on when refugees are informed about the deadline, Lord Sharpe admitted he needed to investigate further. Labour's Lord Coaker countered, asserting many refugees find themselves homeless shortly after receiving their notice due to government policy, which does not reflect the minister's assurances.

Despite the controversy, Lord Sharpe maintained that refugees are given sufficient notice before having to move on.
