Despite the strong winds and rain, the race continues with the wind and sea state expected to be light over the next 24 hours.

The race, which started on Saturday from Cowes on the Isle of Wight, headed for Cherbourg via the Fastnet Rock off Ireland, set a new record of 430 yachts, beating the 388 that took part in the 2019 race.

The event, organized by the Royal Ocean Racing Club since 1925, attracts both amateur and professional sailors from around the world.

One yacht, the Sun Fast 3600 Vari, unfortunately sank, but the crew is reported to be safe and well.

Poole Lifeboat Station attended yachts encountering problems in "lively" conditions during "relentless heavy rain" on Saturday evening.

HM Coastguard was involved in multiple incidents, some involving injured crew.

Race director Steve Cole praised the efforts of HM Coastguard and the RNLI for their assistance, adding that the strong winds were forecast well in advance.

"The club would like to thank HM Coastguard and the RNLI for their assistance.

It is thanks to their effort and skill that the incidents were dealt with professionally and those who required assistance were recovered safely," he said.

Despite the challenging conditions, the race continues, with boats of all shapes, sizes, and age taking part in the historic race.

The Rolex Fastnet Race is one of the most prestigious and challenging offshore races in the world, attracting top sailors and avid sailing enthusiasts alike.

The Royal Ocean Racing Club has been organizing the race since 1925, and it continues to be a highly anticipated event in the sailing calendar.

While the strong winds and rain have led to the retirement of many yachts, it is expected that the remaining competitors will continue to push through the challenging conditions in the hopes of claiming victory.
