The 36-year-old athlete, who gained fame for securing two gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, shared her experience through a video on Coeliac UK's Instagram account.
In her message, Adlington emphasized the necessity of gluten-free prescriptions for managing coeliac disease, which affects approximately one in every 100 individuals.
She highlighted concerns regarding the reduction of these prescriptions in some regions of the UK, stating, "I have definitely quickly learnt how vital gluten-free prescriptions are for managing this condition." Adlington urged the public to support a petition being submitted to the UK government to ensure that the voices of those affected by the condition are heard.
Coeliac disease is an autoimmune disorder in which the ingestion of gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye, triggers an immune response that damages the small intestine.
This condition can lead to various symptoms, including diarrhea, abdominal pain, and bloating.
The importance of timely diagnosis and proper dietary management is critical for those suffering from this disorder.
On October 23, 2023, Adlington also shared the heartbreaking news of her recent miscarriage at 20 weeks of pregnancy, revealing that during a routine scan, no heartbeat was detected.
In her poignant announcement, she expressed the depth of her loss and her desire to keep the memory of her daughter, Harper, alive.
This marks her second miscarriage; a prior loss occurred in August 2022, which resulted in emergency surgery following the discovery of complications at the 12-week scan.
Adlington has received an outpouring of support from fellow athletes and the public, including words of encouragement from decorated competitors like Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill and Adam Peaty.
