On Sunday afternoon, a knife attack in the Stoneybatter area of Dublin resulted in the injury of three men.

The incident quickly drew a significant police presence, with members of the Gardaí arriving at the scene within minutes.

The prompt response has been commended by senior government officials, including Taoiseach Micheal Martin and Justice Minister Jim O'Callaghan.

A man, believed to be homeless and of Latin American descent, was arrested at the scene.

Authorities indicated that the suspect had not previously come to the attention of the Gardaí.

Reports suggest that the attacks were random, occurring in several locations—Oxmantown Road, Carnew Street, and Niall Street—where the victims were reportedly unsuspecting passersby.

Taoiseach Martin expressed his thoughts for the victims and their families, wishing them a swift recovery.

He praised the Gardaí for their rapid response, which he noted was both effective and essential in managing the situation.

Justice Minister O’Callaghan echoed these sentiments, stating that had the Gardaí not been present so quickly, the injuries sustained could have been more severe, or even fatal.

O’Callaghan described the incident as “horrific” for those involved and “shocking” for the local community, as one of the injured was identified as being related to a friend of his.

He detailed how one victim was attacked from behind, suffering a slash to the neck.

The Gardaí reported that the attacks appeared to be random, and the suspect was not known to have a history of violent behavior before this incident.

O’Callaghan noted that while such incidents are not common, the police response plan was effective in containing the situation and apprehending the individual.

The arrested man has not sought asylum in Ireland, according to Justice Minister O'Callaghan.

He emphasized the challenges faced by law enforcement in preventing such attacks from happening when individuals are not under observation.

The investigation into the incident continues as the suspect remains in custody.
