Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu briefed Putin on the successful operation which marks Russia's most substantial gain since May. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized the importance of troop withdrawal to avoid encirclement at a Munich security conference.
Ukraine's commander-in-chief, Oleksandr Syrsky, orchestrated the strategic pullback due to growing challenges, including a delay in a $60-billion US aid package. Ukraine's retreat faced criticism, but Zelensky expressed positive expectations of US support after conversing with President Biden.
The Donetsk region, which includes Avdiivka, is contested, and despite Moscow's claims of annexation, international recognition is lacking. The ongoing conflict has devastated the city, leaving fewer than 1,000 residents from a pre-war population of 30,000. Experts doubt Russia's ability to translate this victory into broader success.
