President Sisi receives Emir Tamim for Egyptian-Qatari summit

Egypt's President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi welcomed Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani in Cairo for a high-level Egyptian-Qatari summit. The main agenda for the summit is the crisis of captives held by Hamas amid the Israeli conflict in the Gaza Strip, which escalated on October 7.

This meeting follows a recent discussion between a Hamas delegation and the Head of the Egyptian General Intelligence Service, focusing on the captives' issue and a humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza.

Egypt and Qatar have been instrumental in mediating efforts for a truce in Gaza and the exchange of captives.

A key achievement of the Egyptian-Qatari mediation was the release of two Israeli captives in late October for humanitarian reasons.

The ongoing conflict, sparked by a Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, has resulted in significant casualties and captives on both sides, with the Israeli response leading to thousands of Palestinian deaths and injuries.

The summit highlights the continued regional efforts to address the humanitarian and political challenges of the Gaza conflict.
