Bins for bulky waste to be positioned territory-wide

Bins for bulky waste to be positioned territory-wide

Residents of the British Virgin Islands will have the opportunity to properly rid themselves of bulky waste as the territory undergoes a ‘pre-Christmas’ cleanup.

A government-commissioned press release indicated that large bins would be positioned in strategic locations from Friday to Monday (December 20 to 23).

It said: “Designated areas where bins will be placed are as follows: on Tortola; Mount Sage, Brewer’s Bay, Carrot Bay, Cane Garden Bay, West End Community Centre, Cappoon’s Bay, Sea Cow’s Bay, Huntum’s Ghut, Lower Estate, Baugher’s Bay, Belle Vue, Fahie Hill, Little Dix Hill, East End Police Station, Major Bay Gas Station, Fat Hog’s Bay Tennis Court area and Brandywine Bay.”

It continued: “On Virgin Gorda; by the Fire Station area in the Valley and behind the Robinson O’Neal Memorial Primary School in North Sound. In Jost Van Dyke, in Great Habour and Little Habour.”

Ongoing cleanup efforts

In the meantime, the pre-Christmas initiative is “part of the ongoing clean up initiative and expressed that the bins are only a temporary measure to help boost efforts in each community,” Assistant Manager of the Department of Waste Management, Anslem Meyers said.

The release stated further that all bins would be removed on Christmas Eve, December 24, after which persons will be prohibited from disposing similar items at the locations.

“Offenders caught dumping in those areas will face a fine of up to $500 and/or six months imprisonment. Persons are also reminded to discontinue dumping bulky waste at the communal bin sites,” it added.

Members of the community in need of assistance to have their bulky waste disposed of can contact the Department of Waste Management at 468-4934 or 468-4935.
