Powerball Jackpot Reaches $856 Million as UK Sales Add New Players

Powerball Jackpot Reaches $856 Million as UK Sales Add New Players

No ticket matched all six numbers in Wednesday’s draw, sending the prize to the eighth-largest in the game’s history ahead of Saturday’s drawing.
The Powerball jackpot has climbed to an estimated $856 million after no ticket matched all six numbers in Wednesday's drawing, extending a three-month rollover run and setting up one of the largest lottery draws in the game's history.

Saturday's drawing, scheduled for 10.59pm Eastern Time, will offer a cash option of $372 million before taxes.

The advertised $856 million prize is the estimated value of an annuity paid in 30 annual instalments, while the cash option is the amount available to a winner who chooses an immediate lump-sum payment instead.

The jackpot now ranks as the eighth-largest in Powerball history.

The game's record prize remains the $2.04 billion jackpot won by a single ticket in California in 2022. The current run is the largest of 2026 so far, though it remains below the series of billion-dollar prizes that have periodically drawn global attention to the multi-state lottery.

Wednesday's winning numbers were 14, 20, 59, 60 and 61, with a red Powerball of 25. The Power Play multiplier was two.

No ticket matched the five white balls and the Powerball required for the grand prize, but a ticket sold in Ohio matched the five white balls to win $1 million.

The jackpot had been estimated at $794 million before Wednesday's draw, with a cash value of $345.2 million.

Its rise to $856 million reflects the familiar mechanics of a rolling lottery: when nobody wins the top prize, money from subsequent ticket sales is added to the prize pool.

The larger the jackpot becomes, the more ticket sales it tends to attract, accelerating the increase.

The last Powerball jackpot was won on 2 May, when tickets in Florida and Texas split a $20 million prize.

Five Powerball jackpots had already been won in 2026 before the current rollover began, including prizes in North Carolina, Arkansas, Delaware, Indiana and Kansas.

The draw is also significant because it is among the first major Powerball rollovers since the game became available in the United Kingdom.

Ticket sales began there on 21 July through Allwyn UK, the operator of the National Lottery, marking Powerball's first expansion outside the United States.

British players can now enter the same underlying Powerball draw through the National Lottery's UK offering, branded Powerball Money.

The launch gives UK customers access to prize levels far beyond those previously associated with domestic lottery games, while giving Powerball a substantially larger potential player base.

Powerball officials have said that a larger market can increase sales during a rollover and may therefore contribute to faster jackpot growth.

The available evidence does not establish how much of the current rise is attributable to UK participation: the British launch is only weeks old, and the prize had already been growing for months.

But the expansion changes the scale of the game by connecting a new national market to an established American lottery.

In the United States, Powerball is played in 45 states, Washington, DC, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands.

Drawings take place every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday.

The game is administered by the Multi-State Lottery Association in partnership with participating lotteries.

The difference between the headline prize and the cash option often causes confusion.

The annuity figure assumes that the lottery invests the prize fund and pays the winner over three decades.

The cash figure represents the immediate value available from the prize pool.

Both figures are advertised before applicable taxes.

Tax treatment depends on where a winning ticket is bought and on the winner's circumstances.

Federal taxes apply to US lottery winnings, while state taxes vary.

California and Texas, for example, do not levy state income tax on lottery prizes.

UK rules and the terms of the local Powerball offering differ, so a UK winner's prize structure should be assessed under the conditions applying to that ticket rather than by simply converting the advertised US dollar value into pounds.

The chance of winning the jackpot remains approximately one in 292.2 million.

That probability does not change as the prize rises.

Smaller prizes have better odds, but the overwhelming majority of tickets do not win a major prize.

Lottery officials present the huge prizes as optional entertainment rather than a financial strategy.

For players, the practical distinction is simple: the $856 million headline creates the spectacle, but the odds remain fixed and the lump-sum value, tax treatment and any prize-sharing arrangement determine what a jackpot winner would actually receive.

Saturday's draw will determine whether the current run ends with a new winner or moves closer to the billion-dollar threshold, with the UK now participating in a Powerball rollover for the first time.
