The UK government's plan to introduce minimum service rules for train operators, ambulance workers, and border security staff during strikes. Under these rules, approximately 40% of rail services will run during strikes to ensure that priority routes remain open.
The legislation is also intended to guarantee emergency services continue during ambulance worker strikes and maintain effective border security at ports and airports. The government aims to have the legislation in effect before Christmas, subject to parliamentary approval.
While the government believes these measures are necessary to ensure public services continue during strikes, unions have criticized them as unworkable and undemocratic.
The legislation also allows employers to issue work notices to unions, requiring employees to work during industrial action, with no automatic protection from unfair dismissal for those who choose to strike. The opposition Labour Party has pledged to repeal this legislation if they come into power.
