A small aerobatic plane, the Fouga Magister, crashed into the sea during an airshow off the coast of Le Lavandou, southeast France.

The 65-year-old pilot, performing just before a demonstration by the French air force's elite acrobatic team, was found dead.

Built after World War II, the Fouga Magister lacks an ejection seat and was historically used by the French army as a trainer jet.

The airshow was cancelled after the tragedy.

Earlier in the week, two French pilots died in a collision involving Rafale fighter jets in northeastern France.
