He says he has lost everything, including his career and his family's trust.

He also denies grooming the younger man and says that the criticism he has faced since admitting the affair has been relentless and has caused him great pain.

He addressed his "innocent" younger colleague directly and urged people to stop attacking him.

Schofield's interview with the BBC also addressed the issue of homophobia in the media and the way that age differences in relationships are perceived differently depending on the sexual orientation of the individuals involved.

ITV has announced an external review led by a barrister to investigate claims of misconduct made against former This Morning presenter Philip Schofield, who admitted to having an affair with a younger man while still married.

The review will seek to establish the facts of the matter, and ITV has denied reports that it had ignored evidence of the affair in a previous investigation.

The former employee involved in the affair was aged 19 when he first worked at This Morning and 20 when he secured a job as a runner on the show.

Schofield has been dropped by his agent and ambassadorships, and will no longer present the British Soap Awards or a new prime-time series.

ITV bosses are due to give evidence to a parliamentary committee on Tuesday regarding proposed legislation governing broadcasters.
