The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) has condemned the "abhorrent" abuse directed at referee Anthony Taylor following the Europa League final in Budapest.
In a statement, the referee's body expressed its appalling nature and injustice towards Taylor and his family as they were harassed and abused at the airport on their way home.
Footage of the incident has been circulating on social media, showing Taylor and his family being accosted by angry fans as they were escorted through the airport.
Scuffles broke out as they disappeared through a secure door, with a chair being thrown.
PGMOL emphasized its support for Taylor and his family and expressed its determination to provide full support to the referee.
Meanwhile, Uefa is currently waiting for reports from match officials and delegates before deciding whether to take action against Jose Mourinho for his actions during the separate incident in the car park under the stadium after the match.
Mourinho criticized Taylor in his news conference and was later captured ranting and making pointed comments as Taylor and officials were boarding a minibus.
Roberto Rosetti, Uefa's chief refereeing officer, attempted to calm the situation down.
Taylor issued yellow cards to 13 players during the ill-tempered game, setting a new record for the most bookings in a Europa League final.
He also booked seven Roma players, the most in a Europa League final.
Delays and injuries saw more than 25 minutes of injury time played across the four halves of the game, which went to extra time and then a shootout.
