Last May, Simon revealed that he suffers from hearing loss in one ear. Now, in the interview, the half of the duo "Simon & Garfunkel" talks about his failure to return to performing, and how playing and recording on his own have helped him: "I have three songs I'm working on right now, one I finished. It feels like half a step from the last album. It's saving my life, because I still don't understand how to perform in my condition."
During the interview, Simon also spoke at length about his latest album: "With Seven Psalms, I had a lot of time to be alone in the process, and I learned a lot about my musical thinking, how I translate thoughts into the tools I have in my hands. I just bought a large collection of percussion instruments that belonged to someone, because there were specific bells I wanted to work with," he shared. Over the years, he explained, he realized that he has a kind of "cycle" in his creation: "I have a cycle that starts every three years: I start writing songs again. It's not that I say 'Okay, time to write, I'm going to the work table'. But once I get into it, I write all day, just walking or sitting with a guitar. I didn't understand this until my 40s, but it has accompanied me all my life."
