European luxury sector stocks have stumbled at the start of 2024, with only two out of the top 20 brands showing early gains.

Bank of America has kept a close eye on the sector, highlighting the crucial influence of Chinese consumers and the difficulties some brands are facing in their efforts to recover lost market share.

January 2024 has been tough for the industry, with the majority of major luxury stocks in decline. LVMH notably lost its title as Europe's most valuable company to pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk, and LVMH's Bernard Arnault is no longer the top billionaire worldwide.

Bank of America analysts have shared a comprehensive report foreseeing further revenue and profit downgrades in the coming months. The bank predicts a moderate 4% revenue growth for 2024, a slowdown from the previous year's 11%.

China remains central to the luxury market's success, with its spending expected to contribute 80% of the industry's incremental revenues in 2024, despite the slow return of flights to Europe impacting demand there.

Brands undergoing rebranding must overcome additional hurdles, with the necessity to invest more to promote new designer lines. Brands like Gucci and Burberry are singled out for the steep challenges ahead in revitalizing their products.

Yet, the outlook isn't entirely gloomy. Bank of America has faith in resilient brands like Hermes and still sees potential in LVMH, predicting a significant price target increase.

However, they expect brands such as Kering, Burberry, Ferragamo, and Tod's to struggle. Moncler and Swatch, downgraded to neutral, are facing their own issues with growth and the fluctuating watch market.

Ultimately, the European luxury sector presents a complex picture in 2024, balancing caution with strategic opportunities as it reaches a critical juncture. Investors need to tread carefully to identify the risks and possibilities in this uncertain yet promising market.
