On February 5, 2025, Ofcom announced the conclusion of its investigation into the adult-only subscription platform OnlyFans, initially opened in May 2024 over concerns regarding the prevention of under-18 users accessing pornography.

The regulator stated that it has shifted the focus of its inquiry to assess whether OnlyFans failed to provide complete and accurate information during the investigation process.

In its public statement, Ofcom noted that it has ‘revised the scope’ of the investigation but affirmed that its supervision team will continue to engage with OnlyFans regarding the implementation of measures intended to protect children from inappropriate material.

The investigation's original concerns were tied to age verification practices on the platform, which, under pre-Online Safety Act regulations, are required of UK-based video-sharing platforms to prevent underage access to pornographic content.

In response to the investigation, OnlyFans indicated that a ‘coding configuration issue’ had led to errors in reporting age verification, which the platform rectified once the issue was identified.

Ofcom stated that it has made 'no findings on these issues' and reserved the right to revisit the investigation if new information arises.

OnlyFans expressed its satisfaction with Ofcom’s decision, reaffirming its commitment to age verification processes.

The platform has utilized the UK Government-approved age-assurance provider Yoti since 2021 to ensure its users are over the age of 18. The company emphasized that its age assurance settings have been established to restrict access to users below 20 years old.

As it stands, Ofcom is continuing its oversight to ensure compliance with regulatory measures aimed at protecting minors from accessing restricted content on digital platforms.
