Nvidia, the US-based leader in AI chip technology, has reported a significant increase in sales, attributing part of its success to the rise of advanced reasoning models in artificial intelligence.

In its latest financial results released on February 27, 2025, Nvidia announced a revenue of $39.3 billion (£31.02 billion), marking a remarkable 78% increase compared to the same period in the previous year.

This growth comes despite a tumultuous year in which Nvidia briefly lost $595 billion (£469 billion) in market value, largely influenced by the emergence of Chinese AI firm DeepSeek.

DeepSeek has purportedly developed competitive AI models at a lower cost, generating concerns regarding Nvidia’s market position.

Nvidia's Chief Executive Officer, Jensen Huang, indicated that the surge in demand is significantly driven by new AI models that demonstrate reasoning capabilities.

These models, which process information incrementally and solve problems step by step—often referred to as chain of thought reasoning—necessitate a higher computational power.

According to Huang, reasoning models are pushing demand for Nvidia’s advanced Blackwell chips to unprecedented levels, as they require more resources for data processing to enhance performance.

Industry analysts have noted that firms such as OpenAI, DeepSeek, and Anthropic are increasingly implementing reasoning models in their AI systems.

The adapted technologies aim to improve the accuracy and effectiveness of AI responses by integrating complex reasoning processes.

Huang emphasized that the evolving landscape of reasoning-based AI necessitates additional computational resources, fundamentally altering the framework within which AI models function.

He stated, "Reasoning AI adds another scaling law—enhancing computing power for training enhances model intelligence, and greater computing power for extended reasoning produces more sophisticated answers."

Analysts have acknowledged Nvidia's strong financial performance as representative of ongoing demand for AI products, despite apprehensions regarding potential competition.

Alvin Nguyen, a senior analyst at Forrester, remarked that the company's ability to achieve record earnings underlines persistent market interest.

In an unexpected display of support, Huang congratulated DeepSeek, recognizing its innovative strides in the AI sector.

He noted that DeepSeek’s reasoning model has “ignited global enthusiasm” and emphasized the importance of its open-source approach to developing high-quality reasoning AI models.

This has led nearly all major AI developers to adopt methodologies similar to DeepSeek’s. The combination of these factors indicates a dynamic and rapidly evolving AI landscape, reflecting both competitive pressures and technological advancements in the industry.
