Nurse Union Leaders Express Outrage Over Doctors' Pay Proposal
Nurse union leaders have criticized the UK government's proposed pay increase for consultants in England, which they consider as unfair compared to what nurses have received. The Royal College of Nursing described the potential 20% pay increase for senior NHS doctors this year as "galling" and warned of a heightened risk of renewed nurse strikes.

The RCN pointed out the need for faster progression through pay scales for nurses, similar to what's offered to consultants, recognizing their critical skills. Despite a year of stalemate since considering strikes, the RCN claims the issue remains unresolved. If the British Medical Association approves the deal, consultants could see a significant pay rise, except those in the mid-range pay band.
Health Secretary Victoria Atkins has declared the offer as fair, aiming to modernize contracts and improve parental leave, while tackling strike actions that have led to over a million canceled NHS treatments and appointments and cost the service £1bn. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak cited these strikes as a factor in England's record-high hospital waiting lists, now at 7.8 million. The BMA initially sought an above-inflation raise, arguing that consultant pay has effectively decreased since 2008 when accounting for inflation.
