Current figures indicate that approximately 100 additional hospital beds are occupied by individuals suffering from the virus, which is known to induce severe sickness and diarrhoea.
This surge in cases coincides with warnings from the UK Health Security Agency regarding a potential new wave of norovirus incidences, especially affecting individuals previously infected this winter.
Health officials have highlighted that variants of norovirus are showing increased prevalence, which may pose renewed risks to those who have recently recovered from the illness.
In addition, there has been a notable increase in public inquiries related to norovirus, with visits to the NHS webpage dedicated to the virus surging by 40% in just one week.
This figure represents more than double the number of visits recorded for the corresponding week a year ago.
Karen Bonner, the chief nurse for NHS London, acknowledged the mounting pressure on the health system, stating, “The rising number of norovirus cases in London hospitals is putting the NHS under increasing pressure at what is already a difficult time for health services.” She emphasized that hospitals are already operating at high capacity due to seasonal illnesses, and urged the public to take necessary precautions to mitigate the spread of norovirus.
Bonner also reassured the public regarding the use of NHS services, encouraging people to continue seeking assistance via NHS 111 and NHS 111 online for advice and support.
She advised that emergency services should be reserved for life-threatening situations only, to help manage the demand on healthcare facilities during this peak period.
