No-fault eviction ban delayed indefinitely by court reforms

A ban on "no-fault" evictions in England and Wales will be indefinitely delayed until after the court system is reformed, the government has announced.

The UK government has indefinitely delayed a ban on "no-fault" evictions in England and Wales until after reforms to the court system are completed. The proposed law, known as the Renters Reform Bill, aimed to ban no-fault "Section 21" evictions, but the government has now stated that the ban cannot be enacted until improvements in the court system are made.

Critics, including the Labour Party, argue that the delay is a way of avoiding confrontation with Tory MPs opposed to the plan. Landlords can currently evict tenants without giving a reason under Section 21, and the proposed bill seeks to address this issue by making all tenancies rolling contracts with no fixed end date.
