NHS Wales Faces Junior Doctor Strike in January
Junior doctors across Wales will enact a three-day strike starting January 15 due to a pay dispute, after a significant 98% majority of voters supported industrial action.

Doctors' call for action comes after a 5% pay offer, deemed insufficient given a real-terms pay cut of 29.6% over 15 years. BMA Cymru Wales' junior doctors' co-chairs, Dr Oba Babs-Osibodu and Dr Peter Fahey, stated the vote reflects their members' strong concerns.
The strike, according to them, is not about seeking a raise but aligning wages with inflation. Their aims include fair compensation and competitive conditions to attract and retain healthcare workers.
Doctors express frustrations with difficult working conditions, leading some to seek better opportunities outside Wales. This contributes to a cycle of staff shortages and declining patient care quality. Dr. Babs-Osibodu highlights the personal and financial sacrifices doctors make, like costly certification fees and inadequate pay.
The upcoming strike will last from 7:00 GMT on January 15 to the same time on January 18, impacting nearly 4,000 junior doctors in Wales. This action comes amid a backdrop of consistent strikes by junior doctors in England throughout 2023 and follows similar disputes involving nurses and ambulance staff.
Welsh government budget constraints have been emphasized, with millions in cuts required from health boards for financial support. Even so, improved offers have been made previously. The government spokesperson indicated their current offer is capped by budget limits and acknowledged the need for more UK funding for substantial pay raises.
Junior doctors in England also plan to strike in late December and early January after failing negotiations, while doctors in Northern Ireland might strike in March. Conversely, Scottish junior doctors have accepted a 12.4% rise for 2023/2024. The Welsh government is set to announce its budget during the same week as the strike commencement.
