The NHS in Wales preparing for a potentially busy winter. The chief executive of NHS Wales, Judith Paget, warns that this winter's demand could match the record-breaking pressures of the previous year.

To manage the expected surge, a campaign has been launched to encourage people to use alternative healthcare services to reduce the strain on GPs and A&Es.

Wales is developing Urgent Primary Care Centres (UPCCs) and Same Day Emergency Care Services (SDECs) to provide prompt care for non-life-threatening issues. These services require referrals from GPs or A&E units.

Challenges include an aging population, increasing population, and limited resources. Despite efforts, there have been concerns about long ambulance queues and patient waiting times. The healthcare system also continues to manage COVID-19 and potential flu outbreaks.

Health boards are asked to make cost-cutting measures, but patient safety remains a top priority. Judith Paget insists on not jeopardizing patient care to reduce costs.
