NHS Trust to Undergo Review After Patient's Killing Spree
After Valdo Calocane, a patient with paranoid schizophrenia, tragically killed three individuals in Nottingham, the NHS trust responsible for his care will face a rigorous review.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) rated the trust as needing improvement last November and is set to carry out the review, with results expected by March. They will work alongside an NHS England-commissioned independent review concerning mental health-related homicides.
Last December, over 30 Highbury Hospital staff were suspended following allegations of patient mistreatment and record falsification. These issues are being handled separately, with an immediate turnaround strategy and new oversight board in place at the hospital, according to the Department of Health and Social Care.
Rampton Hospital, another facility run by the trust, was deemed inadequate by the CQC but had no prior involvement with Calocane.
Calocane's troubled history with mental health services began in May 2020 after an emergency visit. He experienced repeated hospitalizations, avoided medication, and even assaulted a police officer. His erratic behavior continued post-release, failing to attend appointments and acquiring weapons following commands from hallucinations.
Nearly a year prior to the assault, Calocane was not on medication or in contact with psychiatric services.
During their last assessment, the CQC identified areas for improvement in the trust, while applauding staff commitment to progress. Nevertheless, some services retained a 'good' rating since 2019.
Health Secretary Victoria Atkins stressed the need for mental health services to prioritize care and public safety, and expressed hope that the review would bring clarity and aid in service enhancement.
The CQC's mental health director, Chris Dzikiti, promised an expedited review in Nottingham to identify actionable improvements for high-quality, safe care delivery.
The trust is yet to comment on the review, having previously expressed a commitment to patient safety and outstanding care amidst ongoing investigations.
