NHS Approves New Medicated Wafer to Prevent Debilitating Migraines

The National Health Service (NHS) in England has approved the use of rimegepant, a new medicated wafer, to prevent debilitating migraines.

The drug works by blocking the release of a protein that causes severe pain around the brain.

Rimegepant is only recommended for adults who have tried at least three other preventive drugs and still experience migraines at least four to 15 days a month.

While the NHS plans to offer the drug to up to 145,000 people, some may miss out on the treatment if they do not fit the criteria.

Rimegepant is the first oral option for preventing migraines, and other medications, such as beta-blockers and antidepressants, have not been effective for everyone.

Migraines are an "invisible disability" that affects millions of people worldwide, and the new drug is expected to provide a welcome addition to existing options.
