Newcastle United Reports Racist Abuse Targeting Joe Willock to Police
Midfielder Joe Willock faces racist abuse on Instagram after Newcastle's defeat to Fulham, leading to police involvement and Premier League support.
Newcastle United has reported racist abuse directed at midfielder Joe Willock to the police following the club's 2-1 loss to Fulham at St James' Park on Saturday.
Willock, who was a second-half substitute in the match, received the abuse on Instagram after missing a chance that could have put Newcastle ahead, before Fulham scored a late goal to secure the win.
Willock shared screenshots of the offensive messages, prompting the club to condemn the abuse and call for more action from social media platforms to prevent such incidents.
The club has reported the matter to Meta, the parent company of Instagram, and Northumbria Police.
Police confirmed receiving complaints about the social media post and have initiated an investigation.
A spokesperson for the Premier League expressed shock at the abuse and confirmed support for the investigation, with intentions to take action against any identified individuals.
This incident follows similar investigations into threats and abuse aimed at other football figures, including referee Michael Oliver and Arsenal's Kai Havertz's wife, highlighting the ongoing issue of online abuse in football.
