New York Times ranks BVI as #2 best place to visit this year

United States media giant, the New York Times, has the ranked the British Virgin Islands at number-two in its list of top 52 best places to visit in 2020.

The BVI ranked ahead of ahead of Rurrenabaque, Bolivia; Greenland; and Kimberly Region, Australia which were all ranked in the top five. The territory was only bested on the list by the capital of the United States, Washington.

The BVI was also only one of two Caribbean Islands which made the list; with The Bahamas taking the 22nd spot.

Why is the BVI highly-rated

The New York Times said the BVI’s appeal stems from the expected reopening of a number of resorts throughout the territory, including Rosewood Little Dix Bay, which opened its doors in January. It also singled out Norman Island’s development plans for three hotels, a marina, and an observatory.

The American media giant also focused on some of the businesses on the islands that are practicing environmentally-friendly policies.

“Necker Island, the private island owned by Richard Branson, will finish rebuilding by April, and introduce uniforms made from recycled plastic found in the ocean; in 2019, the resort installed wind turbines that have enabled it to run on up to 90 percent renewable energy,” the New York Times stated.

“In summer 2020, the Bitter End Yacht Club will open a new marina using recycled materials and a market to provision boat crews … Cooper Island Beach Club on Cooper Island, a 15-minute water taxi ride from Tortola, plans to offer packages combining island stays with emissions-free sailing trips aboard a new electric-powered yacht from Voyage Charters,” the media house added.

Only last year, the BVI was ranked as the number-one best vacation destination in the Caribbean by online travel magazine ‘US News’.

The BVI edged out St Lucia who ranked second and the neighbouring US Virgin Islands in third.
