During the early morning, over 60 migrants were in distress when their inflatable boat began losing air roughly 8 kilometers from France. The French coastguard launched a rescue operation, saving the first group at 1:15 am local time, with 66 people rescued within the hour.
These incidents ended a two-week lull since the last recorded arrivals on December 3, with 118 entries into the UK.
As of Saturday, the annual total of Channel arrivals stood at 29,382, down from 45,195 at the same time last year.
On the social media platform, X, Home Secretary James Cleverly mourned the death as a stark reminder of the cruelty of human trafficking. He acknowledged the prevention of approximately 25,000 crossings this year and praised the rescue efforts, emphasizing the urgent need for further action to save lives.
