MP Mark Menzies Quits Conservatives Amid Allegations of Misusing Party Funds and Breaching Nolan Principles

MP Mark Menzies of the Conservative Party in the UK has announced his resignation and plans to step down at the next election following allegations of misusing party funds.
The Fylde MP has been under investigation for using party money to pay off unspecified individuals, which the party found to be a "pattern of behavior" below the expected standards for MPs.

The Conservative Party was unable to determine if party funds were indeed misused due to the money coming from an external body.

Menzies had previously denied the accusations.

This week, he was suspended from the Conservative Party after reports emerged that he had contacted a party activist in the early hours of the morning in December, requesting £5,000.

A Conservative Party member named Mr. Menzies claimed he needed money to pay off "bad people" who had kept him captive, stating it was a matter of "life and death." He was also accused of using £14,000 in party funds for medical bills.

Mr. Menzies stepped down from his position, requesting privacy for himself and his elderly mother.

The Conservative Party completed an internal investigation, concluding that the funds were approved by the Fylde Westminster group, which was outside their control, and no misuse of party funds was found.

The text suggests that there has been a pattern of behavior by an MP, Mr. Menzies, that does not meet the standards expected of MPs and individuals handling local campaign funds.

The investigation also revealed that Mr. Menzies may have violated the Nolan principles, which include selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty, and leadership, that are meant to guide public office-holders.
