Ukraine has been accused of carrying out the strikes, which marked the first time that Moscow has been so heavily targeted in a single operation.

The Russian military said that eight drones were used in the attacks, and five of them were shot down while three were stopped with signal jamming technology.

By piecing together visual clues in video footage, BBC Verify has confirmed the location of three drone strikes in south-west Moscow.

The first strike hit a residential building on the outskirts of Moscow, while a high-rise apartment block was hit when a drone reportedly flew into an apartment on the 13th floor.

Another high-rise building was also reportedly hit earlier this morning.

BBC Verify has also verified footage on the western outskirts of Moscow, which shows an unidentified drone flying over roofs in a village where affluent Muscovites live.

The drones used in the attacks had a short set of wings at the front and larger ones to the rear, with a wing span that suggests a potential range of "at least tens, even hundreds, of kilometres." This is not the first time that drones have been used in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

Since the start of 2023, the BBC has tracked over 60 suspected drone attacks inside Russia and Russian-controlled territory in Ukraine, with most of the suspected strikes focusing on the Bryansk and Belgorod regions in Russia near the north-eastern border, as well as in Crimea.

The Ukrainian-manufactured UJ-22 drone has been wrongly identified as the drone used in the Moscow attacks, but it is not clear what type of drone was used.

Ukraine has denied carrying out the attacks.

This is the first time that Moscow has been targeted in such a heavy operation, but it is not the first time that drones have been used to target Russia.

The use of drones in warfare is becoming increasingly common, and it is likely that both Russia and Ukraine will continue to use them in the future.
