This is the sixth time Morrisons has cut prices this year, and M&S is cutting the price of more than 70 family staples.

Retailers have faced criticism for not passing on falling wholesale costs to consumers, but they deny profiteering.

The Competition and Markets Authority has launched an investigation into high food and fuel prices, and grocers have increased margins on petrol and diesel.

Consumers can save money on their food shop by checking their cupboards, heading to the reduced section first, and buying things close to their sell-by-date and freezing them.
