MacLennan, one of the most respected figures in the British advertising industry, has led multiple high-profile campaigns during his time at M&C Saatchi, including a general election drive for Margaret Thatcher and an ill-fated Brexit referendum campaign.

He will be stepping down from the company in the coming months, and M&C Saatchi is expected to announce plans to find his successor in a statement to the London Stock Exchange on Monday.

The announcement comes just weeks after Zillah Byng-Thorne, the former boss of Future publisher, joined M&C Saatchi as chairman.

MacLennan's departure marks the latest phase of a leadership overhaul at the group, which has faced challenges including financial reporting issues and the exit of its remaining founders.
