Modern Slavery Described as a 'Feature' of the Care Sector in England Since Brexit
Modern slavery has emerged within England's care sector following Brexit, as reported by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) to a parliamentary committee. The end of EU workers' free movement has opened doors to exploitation, with workers facing unpaid labor, overcrowded accommodations, and in some cases, entrapment by visa regulations. Referrals of modern slavery cases made by the CQC are expected to rise from 4 in 2021-22 to 50 this year.

The sector has voiced concerns, with care home representatives expressing shock at a Home Office ban on foreign staff's dependents, which could exacerbate staffing issues and mental health crises. Care England's CEO highlighted the ban's lack of consultation and its significant negative impact on care provision and family caregivers. The home secretary announced this measure as part of a larger immigration reduction plan, set to affect 120,000 dependents of 100,000 care workers from spring 2023. The sector warns of a looming care shortage, increased dependency among care recipients, and heightened pressure on unpaid caregivers.
