The scheme's rollout has been marred by IT problems, leading to uncertainty among childcare providers regarding funding rates. This has also resulted in some being unable to accept applications.
Critics, including the Early Years Alliance (EYA), cite this as evidence of a sector in crisis, exacerbated by underfunding and a severe recruitment issue.
The Labour Party has criticized the scheme's handling, while advocating for an expansion of nursery places. Despite the complications, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Childcare Minister David Johnston have committed to resolving the issues and maintaining support for families.
The Department for Education has corrected an IT issue and will provide codes to affected families for securing childcare.
With a significant investment planned, the government anticipates meeting the rising demand for childcare, although spaces have slightly declined this year due to a decrease in both childminder numbers and the pre-school population.
