The revolves around allegations made against Middlesbrough Council, accusing it of selling a building, Vancouver House, "well below market value." The Labour authority sold Vancouver House in 2019 for £822,000, and it is now being offered for sale again at over £2.5 million, which is approximately three times its 2019 price.

Independent councillor Joan McTigue criticized the council for selling public assets at significantly lower prices, suggesting that this was an example of valuable assets being sold for much less than their worth. She emphasized the importance of transparency in such transactions, stating that public assets should be dealt with openly to earn public trust.

In 2019, the council decided to sell Vancouver House as part of its accommodation strategy, citing the absence of any council operational requirement for the building. The council defended its actions, stating that the sale was conducted through an open and competitive process and in accordance with its asset disposal protocols. They also clarified that no further completed sale of the property had occurred.

This case highlights concerns about the pricing and transparency of asset sales by local authorities, with claims that valuable public assets may be undersold.
