A new integrated post-primary school, Mid-Down Integrated College, is set to open in County Down, Northern Ireland. Dr. Mark Browne, the Department of Education's permanent secretary, has approved the plan for the 600-pupil school, but it comes at the expense of the closure of Blackwater Integrated College in Downpatrick.
The decision aims to meet the demand for integrated education in the Saintfield and Crossgar area, catering to pupils who cannot secure places in Lagan College, one of Northern Ireland's oversubscribed schools.
Integrated schools aim to mix students from various backgrounds, including Protestant, Catholic, and others, promoting diversity and inclusivity.
