Microsoft has revealed an update to Windows keyboards with the new 'Copilot' key, a feature that enables users to activate an AI assistant with a single press.
This transformable key, anticipated to be present on several upcoming Windows-operated PCs from multiple manufacturers, marks the most significant change in Windows keyboard design in 30 years.
The Copilot key launches an AI chatbot capable of assisting with tasks like drafting emails. Yusuf Mehdi, the company's EVP and Consumer CMO, believes this feature will greatly enhance computing experiences, hinting at 2024 as the advent of the AI-integrated PC era.
This initiative follows a substantial $13 billion investment by Microsoft in OpenAI.
The function of this key extends to initiating Windows Search if the Copilot feature is not yet accessible. Featuring a distinctive logo, the Copilot key will be conveniently located near the Space bar and Alt key.
This addition of the Copilot key is the first major keyboard innovation since the introduction of the Windows key in 1994, a feature now standard on keyboards by manufacturers such as Dell, Lenovo, and HP.
