The police emphasized the importance of the mother's health and welfare in their statement.
Superintendent Owen Renowden described the incident as 'tragic' and commended the local refuse worker and emergency services for their professionalism in handling the shocking discovery.
Local resident and deputy church warden Marcia Haynes expressed her disbelief at the incident, stating that she had never encountered anything like it in her long tenure at the church, which began in 1966. Haynes recounted witnessing police arriving at the scene as she prepared for a food bank event, only to later discover the nature of their presence.
She noted that police officers searched the church premises in hopes of locating the mother, who may have been hiding.
In the aftermath, a cordon was established around the church, although much of it was removed by Wednesday morning, with only a small area remaining.
Mourners have left tributes, including flowers and a toy bunny, near where the police tent was set up.
A candle was also placed outside the church, accompanied by a heartfelt note that read, 'God bless the little Baby x.'
Speaking directly to the mother, Superintendent Renowden stated, 'We are really worried about her wellbeing...
she will have recently given birth.
I know she will likely be feeling very frightened and going through an extremely difficult time.
If you are the baby’s mother and you do see this today, I want to appeal directly to you to come forward and receive help.'
