The rescue plan involves securing £325 million in new funds and refinancing £600 million worth of debt. If successful, Colombian tycoon Jaime Gilinski Bacal will hold a 53% majority share through his company, Spaldy Investments, contributing £102 million.
Metro Bank's CEO, Daniel Frumkin, has labeled the agreement a fresh start for the institution. Following bondholders' acceptance of a 40% loss in October, the shareholder decision remains the last obstacle.
A representative for Metro Bank expressed optimism that shareholders will endorse the transaction, deeming it beneficial for all parties.
Founded in 2010 as the UK's first new bank in over a century, Metro Bank aimed to compete with major banks, promising seven-day branch services. It now serves 2.7 million clients, with £15 billion in deposits across 76 locations.
However, the bank has struggled with challenges, including a 2019 accounting scandal that resulted in executive resignations, including its founder. Since peaking at over £40 a share in 2018, Metro's stock has tumbled to 39p. Despite the turmoil and urgent fundraising reports that sent shares falling, Metro Bank has maintained that it fulfills all regulatory financial requirements.
