Mental health: Mum who had postpartum psychosis says new unit vital

Tara Maguire, who suffered from postpartum psychosis, highlights the urgent need for a dedicated mother and baby mental health unit (MBU) in Northern Ireland.

15 November 2023 · 06:40 UTC

Tara experienced disturbing thoughts and voices telling her that her baby should be in heaven. She was admitted to a general mental health ward after giving birth, and her daughter Maisie was separated from her for three weeks.

Tara's husband, Chris, described the care as disjointed and poorly set up to handle such situations. Northern Ireland currently lacks a dedicated MBU, making it the only part of the UK without one.

The Department of Health has announced that Northern Ireland's first MBU will be located at Belfast City Hospital, but details about funding and staffing are unclear.
