May 2024 Local Elections: Dates, Locations, and Voting Information

The May local elections in 2024 will take place on 2nd May in 107 local authorities across England, as well as in London for the Mayor and London Assembly members, and for mayors outside the capital.
Voters will also elect 37 police and crime commissioners in England and Wales.

Additionally, there will be a by-election for the new MP of Blackpool South following the resignation of the former Conservative MP. To be eligible to vote, individuals must register by the end of Tuesday before the election.

In the May elections, there are no votes taking place in Scotland or Northern Ireland.

Voting can be done in three ways: in person at a local polling station, by postal vote, or by nominating a proxy.

To be eligible to vote, one must be aged 18 or over, registered at an address in the area, a British, Irish, EU, or eligible Commonwealth citizen, and not legally excluded.

In council elections, voters typically have one vote for each available seat in an election area.

Some areas may have multiple ballot papers for various elections.

In the upcoming local elections in England and Wales, seats will be filled using the first-past-the-post system, where the candidate with the most votes wins.

This includes mayoral and police and crime commissioner positions for the first time.

To vote in person, registration must be completed by 23:59 BST on April 16.

To request a postal vote, the deadline is 17:00 on April 17 for those already registered.
