On the fourth day of the fourth Ashes test match at the Old Trafford Cricket Ground in Manchester, Australia's Marnus Labuschagne scored a brilliant century before being dismissed by England's Joe Root.

Play was delayed due to rain, but Labuschagne and Mitch Marsh put on a partnership of 103 runs, giving Australia a glimmer of hope in their quest to draw the match and retain the Ashes.

However, Root took advantage of a lapse in concentration from Labuschagne to snatch a catch and dismiss the Australian batsman for 111.

England's Jonny Bairstow also took a catch to dismiss Labuschagne, who was disappointed to be unable to lead Australia to tea.

Umpires ruled that it was too dark to continue using fast bowlers, so England brought in spinner Moeen Ali and part-timer Root.

Despite the change in bowling, Labuschagne hit Root for two sixes and two fours to bring up his first century in England.

However, he eventually nicked a delivery to Bairstow, departing on 111, his highest test score outside of Australia.

The rain returned soon after the players left for tea, and play was abandoned for the day.

The forecast for Sunday predicts showers, leaving England hoping for victory to force a decider in the series.
