Following a failed attempt to pass Macron's initial immigration reform, the government and the conservative Les Républicains party reached an accord that increases the waiting period to five years for non-European jobless immigrants seeking certain benefits.
Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne defended the revised bill, highlighting its progressive elements, such as the ban on detaining minor migrants and simplifying undocumented workers' path to legalization.
Facing accusations of aligning with far-right policies, she stressed the government's focus on integration through employment, opposing the far-right's exclusionary measures.
The revised immigration bill presents a crucial challenge for Macron's administration as it attempts to counter the far-right's influence amidst stricter public views on immigration. The defeat in last year's parliamentary elections, costing Macron his majority, has raised concerns over his governance capabilities.
While left-wing parties criticized the government for conceding to the right-wing's demands, Macron's party believes the agreement is necessary given the public's growing concern over migration.
However, the harsher proposals may fracture Macron's coalition as left-centrists resist the tougher bill. An emergency meeting at the Elysée Palace was scheduled before the National Assembly's impending vote.
