The victims were part of a people-smuggling operation, and they had hoped to reach Britain for a better life.

Draghici was one of five people charged with the manslaughter of the migrants, and he has also pleaded guilty to conspiracy to assist unlawful immigration.

The other four defendants were previously jailed for the manslaughter of the migrants.

The lorry driver, Maurice Robinson, was found guilty of the same charges and was sentenced to 13 years and four months in prison.

The ringleader of the smuggling operation, Ronan Hughes, was sentenced to 20 years in prison, while two other accomplices, Gheorghe Nica and Eamonn Harrison, were sentenced to 27 years and 18 years, respectively.

The court heard that the smuggling operation was long-running and profitable, with the smugglers potentially making over a million pounds in just one month.

The trial also revealed that the victims had tried to raise the alarm as they ran out of air, but were unable to do so before reaching British shores.

The families of the victims spoke at the sentencing hearing, expressing their loss and hardship.
