Christopher McGowan has been sentenced to a minimum of 23 years in prison for the murder of his girlfriend, Claire Inglis, whom he had been dating for eight weeks. McGowan had been released on bail to live at Inglis' flat, where he carried out the brutal attack.

The judge described McGowan's actions as "beyond sadistic" and said Inglis had suffered "nothing short of torture." McGowan had a history of convictions, including assault and robbery, and had been granted bail multiple times in the months leading up to Inglis' murder.

Her family called for an investigation into the case and questioned the decision to allow McGowan to live in her home.
